AEO vs SEO: what is the difference?
SEO competes for a place in the list of blue links. AEO competes to be the source of the answer printed above that list — the AI Overview, the featured snippet, the People Also Ask box. Same search engine, different slot. You can hold position one and still lose the query to whoever the box quoted.
Losing while ranking first
The answer box sits above the first organic result and frequently satisfies the question outright. Whoever it quotes gets the attribution and, often, the only click. Whoever ranks first underneath gets a smaller share of a smaller pool.
So a rank report can look healthy while the query stops paying. That is not a reason to stop tracking rank; it is a reason to stop treating rank as the whole answer.
What an answer box rewards
Extractability, mostly. A question asked in a heading and answered in the first two sentences under it is liftable. The same answer, arrived at after four paragraphs of context, is not — nothing in it can be quoted without rewriting it.
Then specificity. Boxes quote numbers, definitions, steps and ranges, because those survive being pulled out of their page. Broad reassurance does not survive it.
Then agreement. If three sources the engine trusts describe your product one way and your own page describes it another, the box tends to prefer the version it can corroborate.
How this differs from GEO
AEO is about the answer surfaces inside a search engine: overviews, snippets, related questions. GEO is about assistants that never show a results page at all — a conversation where the answer is the whole interface.
The two share most of their prerequisites and they are measured differently. An answer box you can see by running the search. An assistant's answer you can only measure by asking the assistant, repeatedly, and counting what comes back.
Common questions
- Is AEO just a new name for featured snippet optimisation?
- It is the same instinct applied to a bigger surface. Snippet work targeted one box on some queries; the answer above the results now appears on most commercial ones and is composed from several sources rather than lifted from one.
- Should we optimise for the box if it removes the click?
- Being quoted without a click still moves the decision, and the alternative is that a competitor is quoted instead. Where the click matters, the lever is giving the reader a reason the box cannot contain — a calculator, the data behind the number, the full method.
- Do we need different pages for AEO and SEO?
- Rarely. The same page usually serves both once its answer is moved to the top and its claims are specific enough to quote. Two pages for the same question compete with each other.
