GEO vs SEO: what is the difference?

SEO earns a position in a list a person scrolls. GEO earns a mention inside the answer an assistant writes, where there is often no list and no click. The page work overlaps heavily. What differs is the unit of success — a rank versus a citation — and therefore what you measure and what counts as a win.

The click stopped being guaranteed

An assistant asked a buying question does not hand back ten links. It composes one answer from a handful of pages it retrieved, names a few brands, and cites some of them. The reader may never load your site at all, and you will still have won or lost depending on whether you were in that answer.

This is not a future surface. In September 2026 we checked the live first screen for ten commercial queries in our own market — every one of them carried an AI Overview above the organic results.

What actually differs in the work

Most of it is the same work. A page that cannot be crawled cannot be retrieved, slow pages lose both, and thin content fails both. If your SEO is broken your GEO is broken, and fixing the first fixes most of the second.

Three things differ. Retrievability: an assistant fetches a page and reads what it gets, so anything rendered only after JavaScript may not exist for it. Entity clarity: the engine has to be sure which company you are, which is a job for consistent names, addresses and identifiers across your own site and everyone else's. And structure that survives extraction: a claim that only makes sense after three paragraphs of preamble does not get quoted.

Links still matter, but differently. A ranking rewards the count and authority of pages pointing at you. An answer rewards being described consistently by sources the engine already trusts.

What you measure instead of position

Rank tracking has nothing to track here. The replacement is to ask the engines the questions your buyers ask and count what comes back: how often you are named, where in the list, whether your own domain is cited as a source, and which competitors take the space when you are absent.

Because a model's answer is not deterministic, one draw per question is not a measurement. Sampling several times per question and engine and reporting an interval is the difference between a number and a guess — our own scoring publishes both, and the sections it could not measure it declines to score rather than scoring zero.

Common questions

Does GEO replace SEO?
No. The same crawl, the same page speed and the same content quality feed both, so the technical half of SEO is a prerequisite rather than a competitor. What changes is that ranking first is no longer the finish line.
Can GEO actually be measured, or is it guesswork?
It can be measured, by asking the engines directly and counting mentions and citations across repeated samples. What cannot honestly be measured is any single cause — an engine will not tell you why it named someone.
How long before GEO work shows up?
Retrieval and identity fixes land as soon as engines re-crawl, usually days to a few weeks. Being named more often in answers follows how the wider web describes you, and that moves in months, not days.
