Moving Polygons MCP server

Which MCP servers are Moving Polygons's own, from the official registry and from asking its own domain, whether they answer, and what they offer. A program checked each of these, nobody copied them from a product page.

Whose server it is
  • Registry namecom.movingpolygons/mapsverified in the MCP registry

The registry name sits under movingpolygons.com. The registry only lets a publisher use that namespace after proving control of the domain through DNS or HTTP.

On 2026-10-28 the server answered initialize and tools/list without a sign-in. First answer in 141 ms.

Once connected

  • create_map, upload_map_part, publish_map change data without a sign-in: anyone with the address can call them.
  • Parameters are untyped or undescribed in 5 of 14 tools: check arguments before calling.

Said by rules from the measurements above. The likely first call is a model's pick from the tool list; read its description before relying on it.

What an agent can do with it

  • not sure · Animate how borders and territories changed across centuries
  • not sure · Track zoning changes and redevelopment areas over time
  • not sure · Map deforestation or coastline erosion as it unfolds

Worth a look

  • Tools that change data, on a server that answers without a sign-in: create_map, upload_map_part, publish_map

A program checks the server once a day: initialize and tools/list, no model. Tokens are the definitions' length at about four characters a token. The grade averages six checks of every tool's name, description, schema and annotations; it says how well the tools are described, not whether they work. The score weighs what was measured and nothing else: answering (25%), doing the product's job (25%), definitions (20%), context (10%), use (10%) and how readily a client connects (10%). A part that was not measured is left out, and a hidden instruction caps the score at 40. The state of vendors' MCP servers: method and numbers →

Tools it offers14 tools · read 2026-10-28
  • get_import_format

    The JSON format for maps: layers with timed polygon keyframes, point markers and a style.

  • get_account

    The signed-in user's public handle, plan and how many maps they can still create.

  • list_maps

    The user's maps, most recently changed first, with their ids and links.

  • get_map

    A summary of one of the user's maps (layers, keyframe dates, markers) and a 15-minute download link for its full import JSON, which can be several MB.

  • create_map

    Create a new private draft map from an import JSON of up to about 1 MB.

  • create_upload_link

    A one-off link (valid 15 minutes) for uploading a map JSON file of up to 40 MB with curl. It creates a new draft map, or with mode replace overwrites an existing map's content. The curl output reports the result.

  • start_map_upload

    Opens an upload (valid 2 hours) for a map JSON text that is sent in numbered parts through tool calls rather than over the network. It creates a new draft map, or with mode replace overwrites an existing map's content.

  • upload_map_part

    Stores one numbered piece of a chunked map upload. The pieces are joined in part order with nothing in between; sending a part number again replaces that part. Returns the piece's length and SHA-256.

  • finish_map_upload

    Joins parts 1 to the given count of a chunked upload, validates the map and creates the draft map (or replaces the map's content, keeping a backup). Reports missing parts or where the JSON breaks.

  • replace_map_content

    Overwrite an existing map's layers, markers, name, description and casualty bar (and style, if given) with an import JSON of up to about 1 MB. The link and publish state stay; the old content is backed up.

  • publish_map

    Make one of the user's maps public at its /map/<handle>/<slug> link, where anyone can view it. The user must first choose a username at https://www.movingpolygons.com/settings; until then this fails and says so.

  • unpublish_map

    Make one of the user's maps private again (its public link stops working).

  • search_maps

    Find published animated maps on Moving Polygons (history, wars, empires, borders, epidemics, sea ice…) by words in their title or description and/or a year they cover. Returns links to the interactive map, its text version and its article.

  • get_public_map

    One published map as Markdown: description and sources, the timeline of keyframes (date and caption), layers, events, and the iframe code to embed the interactive map. Pass its URL, or the handle and slug.

How to connect

Add the server to your MCP client config. Claude Desktop, Cursor and most other clients read this shape:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "maps": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://www.movingpolygons.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Add it

Claude Code, in a terminal

claude mcp add --transport http movingpolygons https://www.movingpolygons.com/mcp

Add to CursorAdd to VS Code

claude.ai, ChatGPT and other clients: add https://www.movingpolygons.com/mcp as a custom connector in the settings.

Each line is something a program found when it went looking: the registry entry, the server's own answer, a spec that parses. A missing line means we did not find it, not that it does not exist.
