Open Index MCP server

Which MCP servers are Open Index's own, from the official registry and from asking its own domain, whether they answer, and what they offer. A program checked each of these, nobody copied them from a product page.

Whose server it is
  • Registry nameuk.co.openindex/open-indexverified in the MCP registry

The registry name sits under openindex.co.uk. The registry only lets a publisher use that namespace after proving control of the domain through DNS or HTTP.

  • Checked on 6 of the 7 days it takes to judge reliability.

Once connected

  • For "compare average house prices across UK councils", the likely first call is get_ranking.
  • For "check crime and deprivation levels for a neighbourhood", the likely first call is search_places.
  • Parameters are untyped or undescribed in 4 of 7 tools: check arguments before calling.

Said by rules from the measurements above. The likely first call is a model's pick from the tool list; read its description before relying on it.

  • can do · compare average house prices across UK councils
  • can do · check crime and deprivation levels for a neighbourhood
  • not sure · look up flood risk and air pollution by postcode

Each of the product's use cases, put to Jev against this server's tool list: can an agent do it with these tools?

Worth a look

None of the five warning signs in these definitions.

A program checks the server once a day: initialize and tools/list, no model. Tokens are the definitions' length at about four characters a token. The grade averages six checks of every tool's name, description, schema and annotations; it says how well the tools are described, not whether they work. The score weighs what was measured and nothing else: answering (25%), doing the product's job (25%), definitions (20%), context (10%), use (10%) and how readily a client connects (10%). A part that was not measured is left out, and a hidden instruction caps the score at 40. The state of vendors' MCP servers: method and numbers →

Tools it offers7 tools · read 2026-10-28
  • search_places

    Find UK places (nations, regions, councils, constituencies, towns, wards, neighbourhoods) and postcodes by name, with each one's official code, level and page URL. Also lists matching data layers.

  • get_place

    Published figures for one UK area: key figures by default, or every figure in one topic. Each figure has its period, publication date, rank, comparisons, source and a link to the figure on its page.

  • get_ranking

    Councils ranked on one measure across the UK, a nation or an English region, for the latest period. Measures each nation makes its own way (such as deprivation) are ranked within one nation only.

  • compare_places

    Two UK areas of the same level side by side on the same published figures, each with its own period and source. Key figures by default.

  • lookup_postcode

    The areas a Great Britain postcode sits in (council, constituency, ward, neighbourhood and more) with their codes and pages. A district (E8) or sector (E8 1) gives its councils. Northern Ireland postcodes are not available.

  • search

    Find UK area overview documents by place name for research, with canonical page paths, titles and citation URLs. Great Britain postcodes identify their published area. No Northern Ireland postcodes.

  • fetch

    Read one UK area's overview figures by its canonical page path. Includes periods, sources, licences, gaps and citation links at the published level of detail.

How to connect

Add the server to your MCP client config. Claude Desktop, Cursor and most other clients read this shape:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "open-index": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://openindex.co.uk/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Add it

Claude Code, in a terminal

claude mcp add --transport http openindex https://openindex.co.uk/mcp

Add to CursorAdd to VS Code

claude.ai, ChatGPT and other clients: add https://openindex.co.uk/mcp as a custom connector in the settings.

Each line is something a program found when it went looking: the registry entry, the server's own answer, a spec that parses. A missing line means we did not find it, not that it does not exist.
