Ambio raises €5.1M seed for AI recycled-plastics buying

Short answer

Helsinki startup Ambio has raised a €5.1 million seed round led by b2venture, with Montis and Lifeline Ventures joining. It is building an AI procurement platform that finds, checks and delivers recycled plastics for manufacturers, replacing sourcing done by email, phone and WhatsApp with structured data and automated matching.

What this means for operators

Ambio's sales pitch is a pattern any ops lead at a 10-200 person company can check against their own purchasing or supplier work. Its supplier information lived in emails, phone calls and WhatsApp, so the company first built a structured dataset, then automated the matching and document reading, and kept people on the commercial decisions. If your team buys from fragmented suppliers, that order is the practical takeaway: fix how specifications, pricing and outcomes are recorded before expecting an agent to do much. The product itself only matters if you buy recycled plastics; the round is a signal of where agentic procurement is being funded, not a tool most readers can wire in today.

Helsinki-based Ambio has closed a €5.1 million seed round, Tech.eu reported on 15 October 2026. b2venture led the round, with Montis and existing investor Lifeline Ventures participating.

What Ambio builds

Founded in February 2023 by two former Slush team members, Ambio runs an AI-powered procurement platform for recycled plastics. It covers the whole purchasing cycle: finding materials, sampling, and long-term deliveries.

The company says the market is hard to buy from. Tech.eu cites roughly 50,000 companies in the EU that use plastics as raw materials, against about 1,500 that recycle them. Grades vary widely, and the quality of post-consumer material depends on the waste streams a recycler receives.

How the platform works

Ambio combines verified materials, structured quality data, AI matching and supply chain management. It does not only connect buyers and sellers: it acts as a principal in transactions and takes responsibility for sourcing, quality assurance and delivery.

The matching engine compares measurable properties such as density, melt flow index and impact strength with a manufacturer's requirements, and looks at how materials have performed in past applications. Language models help interpret information that does not fit numeric fields, such as customisation requests. Each transaction adds data on quality, suppliers, pricing and outcomes, which the company feeds back into its matching.

The dataset did not exist when the company started, so the founders built it through direct outreach and manual collection. Much of that work has since been automated, according to the report.

Verification and limits

Ambio checks suppliers through physical or virtual visits and reviews technical documentation, quality history and certifications, including RecyClass. Documents are not treated as proof, though: customers test a sample Ambio provides before committing.

The longer-term aim is to automate much of the sourcing, matching, trading and transport work, with people keeping the important commercial decisions. Material matching can already be substantially automated, and AI agents can read documents and emails, draft communications and organise extracted information into structured datasets.

Where it operates

Ambio serves customers in the Nordics and German-speaking Europe and has made its first hire in France. It sources from suppliers in Poland, Romania, the Baltics, Germany, France and the Benelux countries. The company reports repeat business from customers who are increasing their spending.

b2venture partner Mathias Ockenfels points to the proprietary quality dataset, the principal model and the agentic engine as the company's moat. That is an investor's view, not an independent result.
